Three Main Types of Contact-Type Temperature Sensors in the Market
Contact-Type Temperature sensors can be categorized by three types:
(1) Thermocouples Temperature Sensors
(2) RTDs Temperature Sensors
(3) Thermistors Temperature Sensors
Three Main Types of Contact-Type Temperature Sensors are widely used in almost all industries, including petrochemicals, chemicals, water treatment, pharmaceuticals, food processing industry, environmental protection industries, paper industry, air conditioning, power systems, pipping engineering, hydraulic machinery, also widely applied in the field of agriculture.
Today, we’d like to introduce their features, then we can figure out which type of temperature is more suitable for our applications.
(1) Thermocouples
Principle: Based on the Seebeck effect (temperature-dependent voltage generation).
Measuring Range: -200°C ~ +2300°C (depending on type, e.g., Type K, J, S, R).
Advantages: Wide range, rugged, fast response.
Disadvantages: Requires cold-junction compensation; lower accuracy (±1~2°C).
(2) RTDs (Resistance Temperature Detectors)
Principle: Measures resistance changing in metals (e.g., Pt100, Pt1000).
Measuring Range: -200°C to +850°C.
Advantages: High accuracy (±0.1°C), excellent stability.
Disadvantages: Slower response; fragile; costly.
(3) Thermistors
NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient): Resistance decreases with temperature.
Range: -50°C~ +150°C (general-purpose).
PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient): Resistance increases sharply at a threshold.
Used for overcurrent protection (e.g., motor circuits).
Advantages: High sensitivity; low cost.
Disadvantages: Narrow range; non-linear output.
